Daily Prime - Sofubi Optimus Oprime Hikari Japanese Vinyl Editions

Sofubi toys from Japan are figures made from soft vinyl plastic. They are created by first making a model sculpture in wax that is then used to make a negative mold out of clay. The clay molds are then filled partway with colored vinyl that is basically swirled around inside to coat the inside of the clay mold to make a final cast. These toys are extremely popular in Japan made by companies such as Bullmark, Marmit, Popy, and Bandai. The crude method for casting encourages designers to get creative by using the same molds with different color mixtures and even incorporating things like metal flakes and dirt to create different textures and effects.

Today's Prime shot takes a look at the complete series of Sofubi Optimus Oprime Hikari Japanese Vinyl Editions from Funko that are examples of this fine art of toy making. Funko used the same process starting in 2014 to make these 6-inch toys that celebrate many of the different kinds of Sofubi from the accurately painted, to the artsier styles with vibrant colors, sparkles, and variations in between. These were sold in limited editions because of the limitations of the clay molds, with attractive window boxed as follows, left to right:

Grey Skull (2014) - 1,000 pieces
Distressed (2014) - 1,000 pieces
