REVIEW: IDW Transformers #10 - Slowly Building Towards A Foregone Conclusion

The Cracks Beneath Your Feet, Part Four is written by Brian Ruckley with art by Angel Hernandez, Anna Malkova, and Beth McGuire-Smith with colors by Joana Lafuente and Josh Burcham.

One thing you have to give Megatron: he's the only person in this sequence who doesn't look perpetually glum. (He is instead perpetually angry, and well... that's kind of his role in this book, really.)

The relationship between Megatron and the Rise is revealed this issue, and it's about what I should've expected. But also we find out that there are a number of dangerous people who've been banished from Cybertron to parts unknown, and the Senate refuses to acknowledge this. It's not particularly unreasonable to assume that a group of offworld combat veterans returning from Space Australia will end up forming the backbone of the coming Decepticon army. It's also not difficult to read the Senatorial bickering in this issue as the Autobots strongarming the rest of the Senate into following its lead. Orion Pax isn't asking much of Megatron and his Ascenticons; only that they suspend all protest, dissent, and public expression of their ideals and goals until such time as the Autobot party deems it safe to resume. And by the way, Sentinel Prime's rule remains solid and unchallenged, so don't expect anything to change anytime soon in terms of who controls the Senate. Gosh, I wonder what would happen if that guy weren't around anymore?

Angel Hernandez seems to be loosening up just a bit, and it helps. That said, I know the situation calls for it but I'd like to see a little less of the same dour expression on basically everyone but Megatron. Beth McGuire-Smith gets a tense scene with Megatron where he's much more animated, and it really gives a sense that he has a public and private face. Good use of the switch between artists! Anna Malkova gets a couple short scenes and makes the most of them as always. They're doing a good job of giving each artist scenes that play to their strengths. Likewise they're good at playing the colorists to their strengths, with Josh Burcham getting the remote clandestine meeting with Megatron where his sense of grit is right at home, and Joana Lafuente handling the smooth, brightly-lit Iacon scenes.

Next issue adds a serious complication to the situation, and I'm hoping things take off from there. Things have been gradually ramping up, but I'm still on the fence as to whether this slow-burn is worthwhile when it looks very much like the shape all of this is going to take is the same story we've been hearing variations on for 35 years now. If the payoff can justify the pace I'd really like to see it soon.

I miss the old IDW continuity.  I didn't think it needed a reboot and the character development is really lacking.  Not enjoying it nearly as much as MTMTE and Lost Light
