Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: Movie Prequel: Alliance #3

(with notes from 1 and 2)

Alliance is poising itself to be your one stop between movies shop for Tranformers ’07 to Revenge of the Fallen bridging. In the first two issues this meant two things. One: Post movie clean up. Things like the fate of Dispensor and his fellow marketing bots, Sector 7’s demise, and Jazz’s burial at sea(Issue #3). And Two, what I presume is reconciliation between Rein of Starscream* and the upcoming movie. Starscream and Wreckage have it out, the Allspark fragment is returned to Prime, and Simmons sneaks off with Frenzy’s head.

Odds are these are the locations movie goers would expect such items to be, and that Rein of Starscream had moved them, so they had to go back.

Bumblebee’s voice is re-injured. As of Issue 3 he talks in radio again. Yeah, you read that right. There’s a good chance Bumblebee will be repeating his lame Junkion impression in Revenge of the Fallen.

Starscream’s new markings are also explained, apparently he’s Starscr-Emo. There is a great moment where Prime generates the holographic driver he should always have had, Mr. Peter Cullen. Here’s hoping they do that in Revenge with the real deal.

Issue 3 is the first time Alliance has felt like its own story. A ton of Decepticons land on Earth, and the name Alliance finally begins to mean something. We get to see the Autobots working with a team lead by Captain Lennox, an Alliance of Autobots and Humans. This organization is probably N.E.S.T as seen on the side of vehicles used in the filming, though this is not explicitly stated. Then name N.E.S.T. may have been left out because according to recent spoiler it stands for Networked Elements: Supporters and Transformers, a legitimate contender for a Weakest Acronym Currently Known award. Whoever wrote that is deserves the W.A.C.K.. The issue closes with Lennox shouting “Roll Out”, which just seemed wrong with Prime standing there.

Which brings us to an interesting problem. Humans at the end of last movie had already armed themselves with hand held weapons that could kill a Transformer. Classically this would beg the question “Then who needs the Autobots?”. Perhaps the largeness of the constructions is to attempt to correct for this stray McGuffin.

Dead End and Swindle should be together in every continuity(comedy gold), and they are here in issue #3. It was great to see them wreaking havoc together here.

The 5 Page Preview that came out last week seemed promising, I’m hoping that Alliance will have a strong finish, but over all so far it’s been kind of… functional.

*Reveiwer has not read Rein of Starscream and could be speaking out of his skidplates.
