Megabolt Megatron - RiD - Figure

When faced with those who insist that BM sucked, one needs only to point to the toys in order to totally refute that claim. Case in point is Megatron Megabolt, a leftover from the much-overlooked Battle For The Spark series. Since there are no KBs in Canada, thanks go out to the mantastic Robowang for sending me one.

Robot Mode
Megabolt stands 14 cm(5.5") tall at the head, 16 cm(6.3") if you include his backpack. He's mostly purple and red with blue-gray for his hands, forearms, shoulder pads, and weapon, metallic silver detailing on his legs, and an airbrushed metallic gray chest with a brilliant blue Vehicon Spark crystal mounted in the centre. His head is blue-gray with metallic silver spikes and teeth, a golden crest, red eyes, and a familiar scowl.

Megabolt is articulated at the head, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and ankles. Unlike most TF figures, he comes with open hands instead of clenched fists. While they look fragile, they're actually made of flexible plastic that's screwed in place, so you don't have to worry too much about breakage. His shins are reminiscent of G1 Grimlock's except for the long heels that are necessary due to his considerable backpack. Indeed, Megabolt has a slight tendency to keel over backwards at the knees. OTOH, he can achieve some pretty nifty martial arts poses if you balance him just right, including standing on one foot to deliver a sidekick.

Ah yes, his gimmick. Pressing down on his Spark causes a control helmet and heavy duty missile launcher to flip out from his back and attach to the top of his head via a small magnet. Pressing the Spark a second time fires the red missile for a distance of nearly six feet. Quite the impressive feature, even for a BFTS toy.

Transformation
Pretty complex, however I managed to achieve it without the instructions. The legs and waist swing up 180 degrees, lots of panels shift, and the robot limbs fold up. It's actually somewhat similar to the Big Floating Head's transformation to battle cruiser mode in "Home Soil."

BCH (Big Creeping Head) Mode
10 cm(4") long, 7 cm(2.75") wide at the rear, the BCH is essentially the BFH mounted on a red and purple chassis with six black insectoid legs. Whereas the BFH is blue and green with red eyes, the BCH is mostly purple and blue-gray with green eyes. Black jet thrusters mounted at the rear indicate that it can also fly.

Rolling the BCH along a hard surface causes the mouth to open and close and the insectoid legs to move in a very creepy, life-like manner. Try putting it in your girlfriend's or sister's bed sometime, see how she reacts. Pressing down on the Spark causes the same effect, as well as firing the missile. The only problem is the control helmet, which gets dragged along the floor. Too much play may result in one beat-up piece of head gear.

Finally, as many fans have discovered, it's possible to attach the BCH to the body of Fortress/Grand/Brave Maximus by removing the insectoid legs like so: https://tformers.com/article.php?sid=350

I don't own a Maximus, and I most likely won't ever be getting one, so slag you all.

Overall
Susp Sez: Despite being one of the smaller Megatron figures, Megabolt is without question one of the neatest and best-looking. The scowl, the colours, the highly roboticized form, the flip-out helmet and launcher, and the insectoid legs jutting out from his backpack all combine to give the robot mode an aura of power and menace, not to mention lots of play value. A real shame we never saw it on the show. The BCH is definitely the weirdest alt mode of all time, but in a good, fun-packed way. Gods bless Hasbro for finally giving us this toy.
