Human Alliance Bumblebee - Movie - Figure

Human Alliance Bumblebee w/Sam Witwicky

The first movie gave us countless Bumblebee figures. Three, count them, three Deluxes and a new Ultimate class was part of the offerings. However, the Ultimate Bumblebee ended up being a shelf warmer. The clunky articulation and cheesy gimmicks did not impress many, especially at an $80 pricepoint. Hasbro has a new idea on what people want. Taking a cue from the Alternators line, they have introduced a Human Alliance subline. This will offer Voyager sized Transformers paired with human figures. First up is, you guessed it, Bumblebee.

Bio

Bumblebee and Sam were best friends almost from the moment they first met face to face. As they learned more about one another, that connection grew deeper and deeper. Now, whether same is behind the wheel, or standing side by side with his friend, they work together as a team. Against Bumblebee and his human friend, no Decepticon stands a chance.

Alt Mode

Bumblebee retains his 2010 Chevrolet Camaro concept mode. As should be for a Voyager sized figure, the detail is pretty good. The paint job is yellow, but the black comp stripes have an outer outline now. The front end is highly detailed, with a red outlined Chevrolet bowtie insignia on the eggcrate grille. The lower grille sports twin foglights on the corners. The rear end has a pair of ported exhaust pipes built into the fascia. You can even make out the air intakes for the rear brakes on the side behind the doors.

One annoyance is getting the doors open. You have to push in the bodywork behind the doors with moderate force to open them. Once opened, you're not treated to much. There is a pair of bucket seats and a steering wheel. This, of course, is for Sam Witwicky, the human partner paired with Bumblebee.

Sam Witwicky

They gave Sam a real dopey facial expression. Suppose that suits him well in most cases. The figure has basic articulation, including knees, hips and shoulders. You'll also find peg holes below his feet, as well as on his back. The peg hole on his back allows him to stay seated inside Bumblebee in vehicle mode. His hands are curved just right for gripping the steering wheel. The use for the foot holes will be discussed later.

Alt Mode Specs

Length: 7in/177.8mm
Wheelbase: 4.25in/108mm
Width:2.87in/72.9mm
Height:2.25in/57.1mm
Scale Ratio:27:1 (est)
Wheels: 4, rotating
Detailed cockpit: Semi-detailed, 2 opening doors, steering wheel, seats

Transformation

Transformation is a bit different from his Deluxe version. Start by opening the doors, then lower a panel located underneath the front bumper. Remove the two missiles stored under his front door sills. Grab each headlight, pull it out slightly, then twist it slightly so the headlights slope inward. Pull out the front wheels then flip them so they're flush with the doors. Dislodge the door sills from their peg, then bend the arms at an angle. Dislodge the roof from the rear end. Separate the rear glass from the roofline and fold the rear glass flush to the roofline.

Pull the rear end so the tail lights point straight up. Pull out the rear fascia and rotate it so the exhaust pipes are pointing down. Pull on the feet until the legs fully extend. Rotate the legs just below the hip 180 degrees. DO NOT ROTATE THE WAIST! Fold in the front half of the rear wheel well so it covers his thighs. Back to the front. Push in the panel just above the wheel wheel so it collapses in. This will allow you to swivel the arms out. Pull on the windshield so that the center of the hood pops out from the sides. Flip out the head, the fold the front end into the belly. You'll see a catch on that little panel that was below the front bumper that connects the torso to the skeleton. Rotate the arms so they can fold down against his sides. Swivel both seats so that the backrest is on the upside. Fold the door sills against the seats. The right arm has the plasma cannon. Flip the cannon into place, then lock it into it's peg. The left arm has a hand, fold it into place. Now, spin both forearms 180 degrees.

Robot Mode

Bumblebee has a slightly different look than his Deluxe counterpart in robot mode, but there's hardly anything wrong with that. There is plenty of detail to go around. The head sculpt especially is greatly detailed and features blue piping. The arm cannon is also packed with details. Speaking of the arm cannon, you have 2 launchable missiles that can be loaded into the cannon. The release button is yellow, just to the side of the barrel.

The main gimmick of the Human Alliance line is that the human can interact with the robot. You'll note a pin on Bumblebee's left hand. You can use on of the peg holes on Sam's feet to mount Sam to Bee's hand. Also, Sam can help Bumblebee in three different ways:

1)Rotate the right arm 180 degrees. Sam can now park his keester on the seat and ride Bumblebee's cannon arm.

2)Rotate the left arm 180 degrees. Sam can now help Bumblebee with added firepower. Once you lock Sam in place, a holster with twin cannons can swing over Sam.

3) On the right side of the roofline, you'll see a dark gray platform. Swivel it so the two pegs point straight up. You'll also notice a semi-hidden panel on the passenger side of the dash. Flip it around to expose a missile battery. Now, take Sam and use the pegs holes on his feet to mount him to the platform on Bee's back. Sam's hands can grip the handles on the battery.

There are two other tricks for Bumblebee. One is a hidden cannon behind his head that can flip out. The other is his battle mask. If you're careful, you can slide the battle mask down without popping off the mask... or his head. However, the mask doesn't fully cover his face. You can get most of it, but trying to get all of it will pop the mask off. Finally, there is the matter of his knees. The instructions show flipping out his knee guards for his battle mode. However, you can flip them out whenever you darn like it!

Articulation

Feet:Pin hinge, 135 degree rotation
Knees:Pin hinge, 90 degree bend
Hips: Twin pin hinges, 90 degree spread, 135 degree rotation. Pinned at thighs for unlimited leg swivel.
Waist:Pinned for unlimited rotation
Shoulders:Dual pin hinges, 45 degree spread, unlimited rotation. Pinned below shoulder for unlimited arm rotation
Elbows:Pin hinge, 90 degree rotation
Hand (left):Pinned for unlimited rotation, pin on the main knuckle line for hand movement, thumb pinned for movement
Head:Ball joint, unlimited rotation

Overall, posing is extremely solid. One minor complaint is that the armor on his shoulder prevents complete wingspan posing of the arms. Also, the roofline on his back slightly restricts rearward leg movement.

Robot Mode Specs

Height:8in/205.2mm
Width:4.75in/120.6mm(7in/177.8mm w/doors)
Depth:3.25in/82.6mm
Supplied accessories:(2) Missiles for plasma cannon, (1) Sam Witwicky figurine

Verdict

Alt Mode: Solid alt mode, complete with room for a companion
Robot Mode:Loaded with detail, playability and poseability, with only very minor problems
Overall:If you have to choose which Bumblebee to get this time around, this should be your first choice. If the other planned Human Alliance figures are this solid, it may be the talk of the entire Revenge line.

Class:Voyager w/figure pack-in
