Megatron Megabolt - RiD - Figure

During the last gasps of the Robots in Disguise line, several toys made it out as store exclusives. The KB Toy Store chain has not had an exclusive Transformer since the Machine Wars line. That’s where Megatron Megabolt comes into play. A holdover from the Beast Machines line, Megatron Megabolt gives the fans the toy they’ve clamored for over a year.

Tech Specs
Decepticon: Megatron Megabolt
Function: Decepticon Emissary

"Each fight only strengthens me for the next battle!"

Embodies the cruel and destructive nature of a nefarious leader. Houses the spark of a Predacon, though newly proclaims himself to be Decepticon - a display of his arrogance. A battle-hardened commander who wants nothing more than universal domination. Has led the devastation of countless worlds before coming to Earth, and is set on eradicating the Autobots. Developed "emissary mode" to combine with his space cruiser and even the secret Autobot defense fortress in an attempt to gain absolute power. In robot form, he attacks with energy claws and sonic missiles.

Robot Mode
Packaged in robot mode, mostly, Megatron Megabolt stands at 5 ½” to the top of his head. Add another inch is you wish to include his backpack. You’ll need to straighten out the legs when you first pull him out of his bubble. And while the instructions only vaguely mention closing his leg panels when converting to “battle platform” mode, there’s nothing to close at first. You’ll have to push the feet forward slightly to give him his proper footing.

Megabolt’s legs, waist and upper arms are a dark blue while his chest is a metallic gray. His red backpack stands out a bit. I think I would prefer that to be black or some other darker color. Smack in the center of his chest is a blue Vehicon Spark surrounded by a red circle, both comprise the button that activate his Spark gimmick. Like the toys in the Battle for the Spark line of Beast Machines toys, Megabolt has a Spark Gimmick. Sadly, it was removed on Bruticus. Pressing the Spark crystal releases the missile launcher stored in his backpack. It flips out to face forward, right above his head. It also has the added feature of providing Megabolt with a helmet reminiscent of the one he wore in the first season of Beast Machines. Otherwise, his head looks pretty much like the Transmetal Megatron head from Beast Wars, only with a gold tiara.

Transformation
There are a lot of steps, making Megabolt a little more trouble to transform. There are a couple places where you have to line things up just right to make it hold. Start out by closing up the robot feet and returning the launcher to the backpack. Swing the legs around so they are above his head after you’ve tucked his hands inward and moved the shoulder panels to cover his chest. Match the pegs on the arms to the holes on the backpack behind his head, close the shoulder panels to the sides and manipulate the legs to form the back of the head.

Battle Platform Mode
In this form, Megabolt measures 4 ¾” from front to back, 3” at the widest point, and 2 ¾” high. He carries over much of the same color scheme with some light metallic blue for the face. The red from the backpack now stands out at the base since it forms the treads. Pressing down while pushing Megabolt forward on a flat, smooth surface makes the six insect-like legs and jaw move up and down. This doesn’t really seem to work too well. I may have a bum version though. Pressing the Spark Crystal will fire the missile.

Overall
Was it worth the wait? Maybe. Megatron Megabolt is a nice toy, don’t get me wrong. The choice in colors could have been better and I could have done without the six-legged-crawly gimmick. Still, he looks good in both modes, even if it can be a pain getting him from one to the other.
