Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon - Transformers - Movie

This is it. The final installment of the Michael Bay era of the Transformers live action franchise. Or that is how it felt at least.

In Transformers Dark of the Moon, the third outing for Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), newly-promoted Colonel Lennox (Josh Duhamel), now-retired Epps (Tyrese Epps), and millionaire Simmons (John Turturro) are joined by Carly Miller (newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) for possibly one of the strongest, if not the strongest film in the trilogy.

What the second film did wrong from the get-go, this film started by doing it right. The film, while providing us great views of Cybertron, also provides the back story: The Ark, attempting to escape Cybertron with technology that will help the Autobots turn the tide of the war, is disabled and eventually crash-lands on the moon.

This crash is what sets the premise for the space race and helps the storyline evolve, providing us an introduction to Sentinel Prime, and evolves the story as to why we stopped going to the moon.

Why indeed.

Ehren Kruger and Director Michael Bay do a good job of keeping the story together while bringing back old characters, and introducing new characters like Sentinel Prime and Director of National Intelligence Charlotte Mearing (Frances McDormand) while keeping the story moving along and only providing the details that are necessary to the essential plot.

Sentinel is very important to a central part of the film, and Director Mearing plays an integral part in being the center-point for juxtaposition between what needs to be done, and what should be done.

While Ms. Huntington-Whiteley comes into this as her first film, she turns out a good performance for an actress who has limited experience.

The rest of the cast also turns out a good performance. Mr. Turturro's performance in this film is much less-annoying than his turn in Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, and is actually much more enjoyable to watch. Likewise, Mr. LaBeouf does what he does as Sam Witwicky, and does quite well, but it will not sway your thoughts of him. Ms. McDormand, John Malkovich, who plays Sam’s boss Bruce Bazos, and Patrick Dempsey (Dylan Gould) put out good performances as well.

Legendary Leanord Nimoy returns to the Transformers franchise after a long absence and fits Sentinel Prime's character, who is the predecessor before his disappearance, along with The Ark. He has prophetic ideals, but he is also flawed, as you will see with many of the characters in the film, which is how real characters should act.

The other Autobots are good, too, with Optimus Prime taking a more visceral approach to his methods this time around. The rest of the Autobots, except for Bumblebee, play a more background role, except the return of Wheelie and the introduction of Brains. For those that are worried that Brains is as bad as Wheelie in Revenge of the Fallen, no worries. Both Wheelie and Brains are equally enjoyable, funny, and tasteful.

New Decepticons that are introduced, like Shockwave, Laserbeak, and Soundwave, are well done.

However, the film stutters at a certain point, with the pacing of the film slowing down a lot, especially during the introduction of Sentinel Prime and the film's main plot elements.

That is made up almost immediately right after though, when the action and the storyline accelerates. Mr. Kruger and Mr. Bay do a good job of keeping the story continuing along with the over-the-top, extremely enjoyable action sequences, which leaves some jaws left wide-open with the always-beautiful special effects of the robots by ILM and the human action sequences crafted by Mr. Bay's team.

With the climax in Chicago, which sees the complete destruction of the city, the film ends with a feeling of finality to it.

We get the feeling that this is the final ride we will take with Mr. Bay and Mr. LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky and his car that happens to be an alien robot in the middle of a robot war.

And what a satisfying ride it was.
