Dirgegun - Beast Wars New - Figure

After being given a portion of Angolmois by Gigastorm in the BWII series, Dirge was transformed from a jet fighter into Dirgegun, a cybernetically augmented wasp! I acquired Dirgegun at Botcon 2000, under the advice of none other than Ben Yee himself.

Beast Mode
Dirgegun is a recoloured and retooled Waspinator. From antennae to stinger, this cyber-wasp measures 15 cm (6"), and has a wingspan of 20.5 cm (8.1"). Main colours are dark blue and black, with lots of metallic silver and gray parts, and pink and red detailing. His wings are translucent gray with silver parts, and are shaped to look like huge serrated blades. The right side of his wasp head is normal, but the left side is entirely mechanical, including the mandible. Other cybernetic parts include his right rear leg, stinger, and part of the left side of his abdomen. And finally, there's the heavy cannon mounted on his back, complete with a translucent gray barrel. Two missiles are attached beneath his wings. The missiles fire a pretty good distance, about five feet or so. The overall result is a very fearsome cyber-wasp indeed.

Dirgegun's rear legs are vastly oversized, which isn't surprising, since they form the robot legs. His cannon can be directed to fire ahead, or right behind him. His wings are mounted on ball joints, giving them a good range of motion. You can actually give him a kind of Tigerhawk-style attack mode, by rotating his cannon and his wings forward. Watch he doesn't fly into your eyes! In addition to his wings, Dirgegun's rear legs have two joints each. His four smaller legs can move a little as well. Interestingly, I've actually succeeded in getting him to stand on just his legs, rather than rest him on his belly. Just make sure that the slots in the robot arms, which have the wasp legs attached to them, are securely connected with the tabs on his belly.

Dirgegun's transformation is the same as Waspinator's, with no special tricks involved. His wasp head halves are very floppy, but fortunately each has either a post or a hole in it that allows them to attach securely to his torso. Robot Mode

Standing 13 cm (5.1") high, Dirgegun looks even more deadly in this mode than as a wasp. His robot head has been completely redone, with the left side being metallic blue, and the right side all mechanical, complete with a Borg-like eyepiece. His teeth are white and sharp. His Destron rub symbol is located on his chest. The only annoying thing about the robot mode is that the wasp legs hanging off the forearms tend to get in the way of poseability. They are removable, however.

Dirgegun's stinger slides out from his abdomen to become a missile launcher. The launcher has about the same range as the cannon. But even cooler is the fact that the cannon can rotate up to replace the robot head. Simply open up the small silver panel over his midsection and then lower the robot head until the cannon comes into position. Between it, and his missile launcher, Dirgegun spells double trouble for his enemies! Hard to believe that this guy is related to poor ol' Waspy.

Suspsy Sez: The Waspinator toy was already quite nice, but Dirgegun takes it to a much higher level. The cybernetic parts are very cool, especially the wings and the wasp and robot heads. The cannon is an cooler touch, particularly the way it can replace the robot head. The result is one totally awesome toy. Dirgegun gets top marks from me. Thanks Ben! 10/10
