Optimus Prime - Generations Titans Return - Voyager Figure Review

So this is Laser Optimus Prime... but it isn't. That deco is coming in a boxset later. So who is this? Spychanger Optimus Prime, that's who.

Still, there's no denying the Laser Prime basis for the figure. The shoulders are the big giveaway, but the head, torso, and legs all have details from the original toy.

He has a backpack of plane parts, but it's reasonably minimal.

The pop-up antennae might look better if Prime's Titan Master were blue instead of gray. In fact, it'd look better without them that way, too. Really, just give me more of this pretty metalflake blue paint in general.

The head turns, and with his headphones on he has that little turning platform thing going on. The shoulder does swivel... but it takes some work. You have to turn his shoulder things sideways AND move the jet wing. And even then it still wants to catch. Generally it's just not worth it. Lateral range is good though, as is the upper arm swivel, and the elbow gets 90 degrees. No wrists - always a bother for a swordsman. The hip range is good, but the forward axis is super-weak on my Prime. He tends to want to fall over.

His thigh swivels are a little loose, but work fine. Knees are good and strong. His feet are angled for an A-stance, but his feet are so small and his legs so chunky that it's really just a suggestion, in the end.

We'll start with truck mode. Decapitate Prime and stow the antennae. Fold in the fists. Turn the arms sideways and lock them to the shoulder plates. Turn the shoulder things 180 degrees, and flip them back. They're stiff. Flip the tailfin up over the neck. Close the truck cab over it. Fold the chestplate up. Slide the hip joint back. Turn the fronts of the legs sideways, fold up the feet, and replace them. Spend five to fifteen minutes of trial and error quality time with the multifacted armatures for the wings until they sit like this. Unfold the trailer over the thighs and tab everything into place.

It's a respectable tanker truck in G1 Optimus Prime colors. The disc intake on the top of the G2 toy is suggested by the details on the cockpit. Nice touch.

And there's a couple pegs for Titan Masters to stand on as well. But deco-wise, this is kind of a mess. The side windows aren't painted and the smokestacks are unpainted and in two different colors. The paint-to-plastic-to-foil silver mismatch on the trailer is kind of hideous.

And speaking of foil, these are the cheapest foil stickers I've ever seen in my life - they were peeling right out of the package.

Let's see how the plane does. Open up the legs, fish out the wings, and unfold the nose. Turn the halves around and lock them together. Play the armature game again until the wings fit into the indentations on the fuselage. Rotate the shins to bring the wheels together. Split the cab and fold it around the sides. Slide the tailfin inwards and unfold the stabilizers. Fold the chestplate up in the back.

I... actually like the jet mode better than the truck. For one thing, they dedicated small, barely-visible stickers to the windows here. And a lot of paint to the nose and wings both. And the silver paint-plastic mismatch is less bothersome in this mode somehow. Honestly, it seems like a lot more effort went into this mode than the tanker truck. Here's a neat little feature: there's little holes for the Titan Master's heelspur in both directions, so they can face forward in both vehicle modes.

Prime's Babyseat Cannon is based on Laser Prime's big gun. It doesn't look too bad when used as just a gun, really. But you know that tab connection on Alpha Trion's cockpit cover? It's back! And still doesn't work! Luckily you've got side-pegs and a place to use them.

The sword is a more ornate version of the G2 equivalent, and is closer to the original shape than the previous Generations take on Laser Prime. It can attach to the turret gun, though it doesn't look too great. You can also improvise storage via back kibble.

Diac derives his name and shiny silver head from Diaclone, the toyline that many of G1's early molds hailed from. Is... is painting the connection point for a Titan Master a good idea? In the long term I kind of suspect that the answer is no...

The novelty of having Spychanger Optimus Prime at Voyager size is one thing. But this is essentially the worst way to get this mold. Laser Prime is coming in the Crisis on Velocitron boxset with his proper deco, this will be remolded as Triple-Changer Octane who is now known as Octone, and Takara is said to be readying a Black Convoy, AKA Robots In Disguise Scourge. And it's still a mystery to me why they prioritized the jet over the truck for deco. Those blue stickers would've been nice on the red cab where you could actually see them. And speaking of stickers, I REALLY hope that they use a better grade of foil on Laser Prime's forest fire deco. But what it comes down to is this: if you are planning on getting any other version of the mold, this version of Optimus Prime is skippable. But it's definitely worth having at least once.
