Jetstorm Ultra - Beast Machines - Figure

The Ultra version of the Vehicon Jetstorm is a larger, more elaborate version of the deluxe version. Where the deluxe version is a great toy, it doesn't resemble what the character looks like on the Beast Machines television show. Ultra Jetstorm, however, gets about as close as you can get.

Jet Mode
In his jet form, Jetstorm measures approximately thirteen inches in length with wingspan of a little over ten inches. He is primarily blue with yellow, red, and orange highlights. The middle section is covered in a dark blue chrome that seems to not really fit in with the rest of the toy. This area is also where a small gray panel opens to reveal his Spark crystal. There are three landing gear that can be lowered. This is likely for display purposes as the character loathes the ground and never touches it (unless he's beat on the head and falls over). The cockpit is articulated in two spots so that this Vehicon can look around while flying as he does in the show. Pressing the red lever at the lower rear of the jet will activate his gimmick. A small section in the rear of the jet will pop upwards and forward, revealing two missile launchers and activates the red lights in his cockpit and launcher section. Turning the launchers left and right moves the cockpit so he can see what he's shooting at. I might add that the glow in the cockpit looks rather eerie in a dark room.

Transformation
Transformation is similar to the deluxe version. Bring the robot legs around from the rear to the front and rotate the waist. Turn the legs ninety degrees and snap them together in the middle and at the feet. Then, open up the sides of the legs to reveal the thruster-jets. Separate the wings from the body and fold the rear half of the jet back ninety degrees. Swing the panels in front of the robot head to the front and lock together. Bring the arm assembly up and lock the arms to the sides of the torso. Open the panels on the wings to reveal the hands and bring Jetstorm's robot head forward.

Robot Mode
One thing I should note is that the arms don't actually "lock" into place. Small tabs being inserted into slot along the sides hold them on. They tend to pop out quite a bit and I didn't actually "play" with him like a child might.

In this hover mode, Jetstorm is eleven inches tall to the top of his antennas (or whatever they are). Even discounting the antennas, Jetstorm (in his robot mode) is taller than Optimal Optimus of Beast Wars fame by about half a head. Considering that he's also about $10.00 less than Optimus, that's a lot of 'bot. To get him to stand, simply separate the legs and move the cockpit around to his back and open up the feet. This lowers his height by an inch. Pushing the button behind his robot head activates the light feature, giving him a nasty red stare. The missile launchers are also usable and activated by small, gray levers in the rear. Each finger on his hands also be positioned, giving him eighteen points of articulation.

Jetstorm also comes with two "drones." These are small, gray missile-like things that resemble a shark. They have light-pipe eyes and a row of painted teeth on either side near the front. They fit on the underside of his wings in jet mode and on his hips in robot form.

Overall
I recommend Ultra Jetstorm on the grounds that he looks a lot better (and more accurate to the television show) than his small, deluxe counterpart. The gimmicks don't get in the way either which is always a plus in my book. The only thing I can complain about is that Jetstorm is out of scale with most of the Beast Machines toys. That and I fear the chrome may eventually chip, as was the case with the Beast Wars Transmetals line a couple years back.
