The Spychangers, much like the RID line itself, just don¹t seem to want to go away. Between this second batch of Kaybee exclusives, Armada Powerlinx, and TF:U, it seems likely than many completists and their wallets are going to be weeping.
All six Spychangers transform the exact same way. Legs extend, chest folds down, and arms slide out. They all measure 7 cm(2.8²) long in vehicle mode except for Mirage, who¹s 7.5 cm(3²) long, they all stand about 7 cm tall in robot mode, and they all share the same range of articulation: shoulder joints.
CROSSWISE
Vehicle Mode: Crosswise is a Pontiac Firebird. A stark contrast to his previous two incarnations, he¹s translucent red with black windows and engine parts, red door stripes, and chrome hubcaps. An Autobot symbol is on his roof.
Robot Mode: Crosswise¹s helmet is metallic silver and his face, torso, thighs, and anti-gravity gun are translucent purple.
HOT SHOT
Vehicle Mode: The leader of the Spychangers, Hot Shot is a Porsche 959. While he still has the familiar yellow, orange, and red flame decos on his hood and doors, he¹s now made of ghostly clear plastic with black windows and shiny gold hubcaps. An Autobot symbol is on his roof.
Robot Mode: Hot Shot is considerably more colourful in this mode, with translucent red for his eye visor, torso, and thighs, translucent blue for his shins and the underside of his chest plate, and metallic silver helmet and feet. His friction gun is made of clear plastic.
IRONHIDE
Vehicle Mode: Ironhide is a Ford F150 Flareside pickup truck. He¹s translucent blue with silver windows, front grille, and bumper, black cargo area, chrome hubcaps, and an Autobot symbol on his roof. I much prefer this colour scheme to his previous two incarnations, which had black spots like a cow.
Robot Mode: Ironhide is a funky clash of colours in this mode: translucent orange head, torso, and thighs, clear shins, red eyes, a translucent green panel on his chest, and a translucent green shockwave rifle. He has the most massive chest of all the Spychangers; his fists don¹t even come close to reaching past it.
MIRAGE
Vehicle Mode: Mirage is a Lola T94 Indy car. He¹s translucent green with red, yellow, and black racing stripes, black spoiler, chrome hubcaps, an Autobot symbol on his hood, and the number 1 in yellow on either side. Quite spiffy indeed.
Robot Mode: The slightest of all the Spychangers, Mirage features a black head, translucent green eye visor, translucent blue torso and thighs, black feet, and a translucent blue sniper rifle.
REV (Race Exertion Vehicle)
Vehicle Mode: REV is a Lamborghini Diablo, which no vehicular TF line would be complete without (or something close to it). His latest colour scheme really isn¹t all that big a departure from his previous two: translucent orange with an Autobot symbol on his roof, black windows, pale red detailing, and a dark red eagle deco with the initials ³T.F² on his hood.
Robot Mode: REV has a pale red helmet, translucent green face and torso and thighs, translucent purple shins and chest (on the underside), and a translucent orange shotgun.
WARS (Wicked Attack Recon Sportscar)
Vehicle Mode: WARS is a Ford Thunderbird stock car. All the paint decos his previous two versions had are now gone. Instead, he¹s translucent purple with metallic silver front grille and crash bars, metallic blue windows, yellow door stripes, shiny gold hubcaps, and an Autobot symbol on his roof.
Robot Mode: WARS has a metallic silver face, clear head, torso, and thighs, translucent orange chest plate and shins, and a red machine gun. Like Ironhide, he¹s got a massive torso plate, but unlike Ironhide, his arms are long enough to almost reach past it.
Overall
Susp Sez: Despite this being the third US release of these toys (fourth counting their original G2 versions), I rather like these little guys. The translucent colours look neat and as I noted earlier, I¹m actually pleased about the lack of tacky (IMO) paint decos on some of them. Though I would¹ve much preferred that they were sold in two packs as opposed to individually. 8/10
