Signal Flare - Energon - Figure

Continuing the Omnicon trend of handling Energon for the larger Autobots to use in their battle against the forces of evil, Signal Flare adds some bright colors and an innovative design to the Autobot ranks. Shame he doesn't disguise himself completely. More on that in a bit

Set Includes

Signal Flare is some sort of half-track vehicle with a large cannon-like mechanism on the back rear of the vehicle. He measures 4 1/4" long, 1 3/4" wide and 2 1/4" high at the highest point of the cannon with it in it's lowest position. Four front wheels and two rear wheels underneath the treads roll Signal Flare along fairly well. The barrel of the cannon rotates when the cannon itself is turned, raised, or lowered.

His primary color is a light blue with dark blue, red, black, and gray-green highlights. The front windshield sections are made up of clear, red plastic. Directly behind them is the Energon chip receptacle. Behind the cannon is a silver-topped platform with an Autobot logo on it. From the sides, this piece is obviously a robot arm with the fist clearly visible at the end.

Energon

As with the other Omnicons, Signal Flare includes Energon accessories: an Energon chip, two small shield halves, and a rotary blade/radar dish. The chip attaches to the receptacle behind the cockpit. The rotating piece attaches to the front of the cannon barrel, transforming it into a radar array. Each of the shield components attach to the sides of the cannon base, pointing outward. They can also be attached perpendicular to the cannon and pointing forward.

Start-Change-Finish

To transform into robot mode, remove the Energon accessories and flip the front headlight sections down. Swing the treaded sections out and then forward, rotating the light blue sections 180 degrees along the way. Turn the rear section so that the cannon forms the right arm and flip the left arm down into position. Push the entire assembly down to reveal the robot head.

Robot Mode

In robot mode, Signal Flare stands at just under 4 inches tall. This mode reveals no additional colors, but brings the light blue out a bit more than the vehicle mode does. Considering his contemporaries, Signal Flare is a little lacking in the articulation department. His cannon arm turns and bends outward slightly at the shoulder, maintaining the barrel gimmick from vehicle mode. His left shoulder is on a ball-socket joint and his left elbow bends. Each hip rotates and can swing out and each knee bends slightly, the right more so than the left on my sample.

Energon

The Energon accessories have a few more options now that Signal Flare is in robot mode. The parts still attach to the cannon arm as they did in vehicle mode. Additionally, the two shield halves combine to form a larger shield that he can hold in his left hand using any of three pegs. They can also combine side-by-side into a fat melee weapon. When in shield mode, the rotating piece can attach to either end to form the Ultimate Energon weapon, a hand-held buzz saw.

Overall

Signal Flare is a decent toy. I really like his looks in robot mode, though better articulation would have been nice. Also, his vehicle more would be better if it didn't have that arm hanging off the end of it, but that apparently couldn't be helped. Not the best, but certainly not a bad toy.

Final Grade: B-
