Masterpiece Starscream - Generation 1 - Figure

One of the most anticipated Transformers toys of this year, Hasbro's G1 accurate Masterpiece Starscream has finally reached the shelves of Wal-Mart stores across America. Let's see if it lives up to the hype.

Vehicle Mode

Starscream's vehicle mode is the F-15 Eagle jet that he was in the Generation One series. This mode is incredibly detailed and very accurate to the real vehicle. Primary color in this mode is white, with red, blue, and silver details. There is a purple Decepticon insignia on each wing, and an emblem on either side of the cockpit that looks like Starscream's crown from the '86 movie.

There are a few interesting features in this mode. The nosecone can open, revealing a radar jammer underneath. The cockpit can open, and a miniature Dr. Arkeville figure can sit inside. A brake flap on the back opens up. Landing gear folds down. The thrust vectors can move. Some people have complained that MP Starscream is small. I beg to differ, in this mode it's larger than MP Optimus as well as MP Megatron. Overall, I have to say that this is the best jet Transformer made so far. People here have remarked that it just looks like a really good model jet; you can't tell it's a Transformer. I think that the included display stand is really neat.

Transformation

The transformation for this figure is really not that difficult. I did it with the instructions once, and will never need them again. It isn't a simple transformation process, that's for sure, but it won't take you twenty minutes to pull off.

Robot Mode

I apologize for the poor image quality, I've only got a camera phone at my disposal. There are lots of other pictures of MPSS out there that you can look at.

This mode is fantastic. If you thought Classics Starscream looked a lot like the G1 version, then check this one out. Almost dead-on accurate to the cartoon depiction of Starscream. Color scheme remains pretty much the same as the jet mode, with a little more red and blue. The only obvious exception to his accuracy are the jet segments attached to his hips. Luckily, these are attached by ball joints and can be removed, as I have done in the above picture. They can also be simply rotated backwards so you can't see them.

Articulation is good; shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, legs, knees, feet, head, torso all can move.

This mode has a few interesting features. The vents on Starscream's chest flip up to reveal missile racks. You can also rotate Starscream's face around; one face is normal, the other sports Starscream's characteristic smirk. MP Starscream might be a little shorter than Optimus and Megatron, but he's still pretty big. This mode can also be displayed on the display stand, making it appear as though the Air Commander is hovering in the sky.

All in all, this figure lives up to its name; it's truly a masterpiece. I have nothing negative to say about it. While somewhat hard to find now, it should be saturating stores in no time at all. The only problem is that it's a U.S. Wal-Mart exclusive, so people outside of the country will have to resort to eBay, for the most part, to get it. I didn't want to wait for my local Wal-Marts to get theirs in, so I bought mine off of eBay, and it was well worth every cent of the $85 I paid for it. More patient people can get it for about $50 retail, though.

Basically, this is a must-have for any Transformers collector, even moreso for fans of G1!
