Depth Charge - Beast Wars - Figure

Transmetal Depth Charge

Series: Beast Wars (1997)
Size: Ultra (circa 7 to 8 in)
Clan: Maximals
Function: Aquatic Forces Commander
Stat Average: 9.375

First Impressions
In the box Depth Charge looks like a breaching manta ray. His shark gun is also visible. Twist ties are in several places, but they're tedious, opposed to the challenges of Spittor's and Scarem's twist ties. Three mode conversion is what the box says. These modes are shown the both side panels. The box back shows the robot mode and a blueprint. The biography, stats, and the Transmetals description. On the bottom are pictures of Deluxes and Megas.

Beast Mode
A manta ray, and a well done manta ray at that. The fins and the head offer nice coloration in this mode. The discs can be fired from his head by pulling a trigger near the tail. The shark drone fits near the thrusters. The fins have several joints to put them in all sorts of poses. The tail can swish back and forth. If you remove the tail sword, you can put it the hands of some Deluxes (Dinobot works, Rhinox and Ramulus do not) and have it act like a big oar or something. The figure must achieve balance while standing on Depth Charge for this to work.

Transformation to Flight Mode
Extend the fins as much they can away from the main body. Twist the fins around so they face the other way. Adjust the fins so that they are closer to the body. Make sure to check the box or the instructions for the correct wing position. And there he is.

Flight Mode
The same basic manta with the wings positioned differently (The drone tends to fall off, so I suggest removing it at this point). Still, it has its upsides. It can still shoot the discs, and now a Basic or Deluxe figure can hitch a ride while sitting down.

Transformation to Robot Mode
Once again, get those wings out of the way. Pull the feet under the eyes forward. Detach them from their holes. Pull them and the manta face plate over the mouth. Rotate the torso. Put the hips together and attach them into the bottom. The thrusters rotate to become arms. Put the arms in the holes where the manta's "eyes" were previously. Open up the wrist and rotate the thrusters in and the fists out. Lift the panel near the trigger and place it on top of the place where you put the discs. Now arrange the wings. Detach the sword from the tail.

Robot Mode
A slight unstable, I recommend detaching the entire tail (don't worry it is easily put back). With the shark gun in one hand and 'sword' in the other, Depth Charge seems ready for battle. He gives an impression of bulk without being all that bulky. The gun's missiles can be fired and the discs can also be. And check out those knees. Close combat action there. Highly poseable, those legs support more than you might realize at first.

Purchasing Advice
Depth Charge is a show Transmetal and a popular character. His price often reflects that. He usually goes into the high twenties or even the thirties, and I've seen him go higher than that. But you might see an overlooked piece and get a good deal, it all depends.

The Final Word
I recommend Depth Charge to all TF collectors. He was on the Beast Wars show, and was a memorable character. His beast and flight modes look great, and his robot mode is awesome. Also, he can be used as a vehicle for other figures.
